The Lemosho Route is relatively new. It starts on the Western side of Mount Kilimanjaro at the Londorossi Gate and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira Route which begins at a higher, more challenging altitude. The Londorossi Gate is a fair drive from the town of Moshi, and considerably further from Arusha. At the gate, you will register with the authorities before being driven a further 12km to the starting point. The western side of Kilimanjaro is still very wild and you may get lucky and spot large antelope, buffalo and maybe even elephant. The Lemosho Route joins the Machame Route at Lava Tower and heads down towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit (see map below). As with the Machame Route, Lemosho trekkers need to transverse the Barranco Wall and then summit from Barafu Camp. The descent is via the Mweka route.

The Lemosho route is considered the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, granting panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. As one of the newer routes, Lemosho is a superb choice for your climb. It is our preferred route due to its ideal balance of low crowds, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. Most of our clients climb Kilimanjaro using this route and they consistently report that they loved it. Thus, Lemosho is highly recommended.

Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest mountain at about 5,895 meters (19,340 feet). It is the largest free-standing mountain rise in the world, meaning it is not part of a mountain range. Also called a stratovolcano (a term for a very large volcano made of ash, lava and rock), Kilimanjaro is made up of three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo is the summit of the mountain and the tallest of the three volcanic formations. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo is considered dormant and could possibly erupt again. Scientists estimate that the last time it erupted was 360,000 years ago. The highest point on Kibo’s crater rim is called Uhuru, the Swahili word for “freedom.”

Machame route is our most popular and successful route leading to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Hikers sleep in tents which are carried up the mountain by porters. The key to the success of the Machame route is its topography, allowing hikers to climb high and sleep low, helping towards better acclimatization. Some of the interesting facts about Mount Kilimanjaro that make it the leading tourist attraction in Africa a) Frenchman Valtee Daniel is the oldest person in history to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. He made the ascent at 87 years of age. Each year, over 20,000 people attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. A typical ascent takes five to nine days depending on the number of hours per day spent on climbing. b) In 2003, South African Bernard Goosen scaled the mountain twice in a wheelchair. His first summit was in 2003 and took nine days while his second, which was four years later, took six days. He used a modified wheelchair to make the climb.

The Marangu route is one of the most popular routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro. This could partly be as a result of the fact that the Marangu is the least expensive route but more so perhaps the fact that it is possible to do the Marangu route in 5 day thereby getting to the summit one day earlier compared to the Machame route. This route forms one of the main differences compared to the other routes It offers you the relative luxury of being able to sleep in huts along the entire route. The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Unlike the gradual incline and hut accommodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents. The Machame Route climb can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is most often tackled over seven days (six nights), for a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The trek begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of mountain, within its lush, fertile rainforest. The route heads toward the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles. The approach to the summit is made from the east, and the descent follows the Mweka trail.

The Rongai route is more exhilarating as it gives you an opportunity to trek through two ways, ascend through the Rongai path and descend through Maragu way. It ascend the highest point of Africa, that is, MT Kilimanjaro from the north-eastern side of the mountain passing along the border of Kenya and Tanzania. It has a unique weather and vegetation state which give added advantage to the trekkers at the wilderness.
