In addition to an abundance of birds, Caño Negro is also home to many exciting animals, such as sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, and a variety of flora native to the wetlands.

ATV tours are a perfect way to cover the variety of exciting and challenging terrains while offering spectacular views of the Arenal Volcano. Our adventure begins at the private farm La Naciente, just minutes from La Fortuna downtown. Here, we’ll set off on muddy trails through the primary rainforest, immersing in Costa Rican culture, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the majestic Arenal Volcano. We start with a safety briefing and a practice circuit to get comfortable with the ATVs. Then, we head out onto the crazy trails of La Naciente, driving through challenging paths surrounded by lush vegetation and local wildlife. Along the way, we stop at Quebrada Platanillo, a micro-basin of the Arenal River that supplies water to nearby communities. This is also where we can spot the impressive Watusi bulls, famous for their distinctive horns. Next, we visit the picturesque village of La Guaria which keeps the “fortuneños” culture, where we explore its church and its old local store (pulpería), offering a glimpse into life in rural communities.

The activity takes place at the end fo the day so you will enjoy the transition in the rainforest so you can see incredible wildlife we have to discover. You will walk for about 1 hour with daylight and 1 hour in the darkness of the forest. Our natural trail offers the opportunity of finding sloths birds such as toucans frogs, snakes and some other things hidden in the forest.

Live the rainforest from another perspective, 60% of its animals are active at night, come and enjoy species that you can only see when the sun goes down. Frogs, snakes, crickets, and creatures that you didn't even know they exist. Tours led by trained naturalist along flat rainforest trails start at 5:45pm at Arenal Oasis. Flashlights are provided and reservations are necessary. You need secure shoes like tennis shoes, boots or hiking (sandals are not allowed)

The ride takes around 30 minutes to get to the rain forest where the hanging bridges of different heights are located. During this approximate two mile hike, with some luck, you will be able to see: Howler Monkeys, Spider Monkeys, white faced Capuchin Monkeys, many species of birds, snakes, Armadillos, Coatimundis (a member of the Racoon family often known to beg for scraps) and various other animals that may include Iguanas and Sloths. After our hike in the rain forest we will continue our journey to the La Fortuna Waterfall, a beautiful place with a lot of vegetation around it. Once there it is another hike down (500 steps with some resting areas) to the waterfall base to go for a swim in the cool pristine waters of La Fortuna river. After all this hiking exercise you will be hungry so we will visit a nice restaurant nearby to enjoy a delicious lunch.

This is an educational tour at a Wildlife Rescue Center located close to La Fortuna. It is a great chance for you to see wild animals, visit their enclosures, learn about the conservation efforts and have fun. It is a perfect, family friendly activity for all.

This is a half-day tour of the Arenal Volcano National Park walking a trail that goes all the way to the base of the mountain.
