Built in 1792 in neoclassical style after winning a public competition, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice was then one of many private venues for performances and opera. In December 1836, a major fire destroyed its interior, but it was rebuilt a year later, akin to the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes.
