Elbasan, located in the heart of Albania, has roots in the ancient Illyrian kingdom of Skampa, dating back to the 1st millennium BC. Excavations reveal that the city's walls were rebuilt in the first half of the 4th century AD. In 1466, Sultan Mehmed II restored the fortifications and renamed the town El-Basan, which means "the fortress" in Turkish. During our visit, we explore the city walls, then pass through the Bazaar Gate near the Clock Tower to reach the St. Mary’s and St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church, renowned for its beautiful stone arcades on the walls.

This multifaceted city has had a traditionally rich artistic life and an enormous contribution to Albanian culture. Shkodra is the cradle of the most important Albanian poets, like Migjeni, painters like Kol Idromeno and Edi Hila, and photographers, the Marubi Family. Shkodra houses the haunting Marubi National Photography Museum, which displays the first photo taken in Albania, and the Venice Art Mask Factory, where a local master produces the same intricate masks used in the Venice carnivals and Las Vegas shows. A city of myths and legends, the foundations of the famous Castle of Shkodra are said to be held by the body of Rozafa, the beautiful young mother who sacrificed herself for it. You will find that this naturally beautiful city has an abundance of mirrors in the Adriatic Sea, the Lake of Shkodra and the Buna River. Until 2009, 7 kilometers of Kallmi Hill were restricted as an Army area. Now, it’s open to the public, unveiling a hidden gem. This trekking tour provides a rare opportunity to learn about the history of navigation and colonization of the Adriatic from antiquity to the present day. Participants will receive a bibliographic list of information compiled by academics and research institutes. In addition, you will discover the diverse fauna and flora of both the hill and the coast.
